The Famous South Carolina Restaurant That Serves Up Buttery Biscuits And Legendary Shrimp And Grits
Southern cooking is practically an art form that's made dishes like shrimp and grits hallmarks of the American South, even if they're sometimes foods that the rest of the world just doesn't quite get. If you ever find yourself out in South Carolina, there's one restaurant that needs to be on your list if you're a fan of Southern cuisine: Page's Okra Grill, down in Charleston.
Page's Okra Grill is a family-owned restaurant dedicated to the flavors of the American South. It features classic regional dishes like chicken and waffles and fried okra, though the menu can vary between locations, so if you're looking for something specific like the Lowcountry classic known as she crab soup, it may behoove you to call ahead first. The fare it's most known for is its homemade buttermilk biscuits and the house specialty, Ashleigh's Shrimp and Grits, named for the restaurant's founder, Ashleigh Page. If you're lucky enough to eat at Page's, it's a must-try.
If you're not convinced yet, Page's currently has a 4.5 rating on Yelp and a very respectable 4.7 on Google. It's also been featured in Southern Living Magazine and has many awards and accolades from publishers like Post and Courier, which named it the best Charleston restaurant of 2023, and Mount Pleasant Magazine, which awarded it the vaunted Best Shrimp n' Grits of 2023. Needless to say, Page's Okra Grill is a South Carolina destination. To many, there's no restaurant better suited to represent the Lowcountry.
History of Page's Okra Grill
Page's Okra Grill was founded in 2006, after Ashleigh Page served Al Roker at Serena's Kitchen in 2004, appearing on an episode of his Food Network show, "Roker on the Road." Encouraged by her T.V. debut, Ashleigh, along with her father, Tony, and siblings, Courtney and Chase, opened Page's Okra Grill in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. They stood out thanks to their delicious food and exceptional hospitality, and a South Carolina legend was born.
After a bit of relocating and expanding, Page's Okra Grill has three locations today: one located on Coleman Boulevard in Mt. Pleasant, another in Summerville, and a food truck based in Monck's Corner. The Coleman Boulevard location was the first of the current three to open and was chosen because the Page family needed a larger restaurant to accommodate their growing business. This location has seen a number of renovations, including a new patio, extensions to the roof, and a playground for kids.
Today, Page's Okra Grill is still going strong and will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2026. It's still run by the Page family, who seem as dedicated as ever to their family pride and joy. Recently, the business also acquired another restaurant, formerly known as Montreaux's. Should you find yourself in the Lowcountry, there's nowhere better to experience the classic flavors of South Carolina cuisine (though take care not to make the restaurant mistake of asking for too many substitutions, especially to the shrimp and grits).
