14 Of The Worst Crumbl Cookies Ever, According To The Internet
In an age where desserts come and go with fads and trends — we've personally seen the rise and fall (or at least stall) of cupcakes, frozen yogurt, and donuts across our lifetime — cookies have become the next biggest thing. Arguably, one of the biggest names in cookies today — and perhaps one of the companies to which the humble dessert owes much of its success — is Crumbl.
Begun in Utah by a pair of cousins in 2017, the company has since exploded to over 1,000 locations in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Part of the brand's business model is its FOMO experience: There's a weekly rotating lineup of cookies that encourages customers to keep coming back to try the latest and greatest sugary creation.
But... are they all that great? Certainly, there are Crumbl super-fans who go gaga over those pastel pink boxes and regularly post their tasting reviews online, but there are plenty of detractors, too. Those who may like Crumbl well enough but don't shy away from expressing their opinion when a certain cookie is simply inedible. Those are the people we turned to in the writing of this article, which sets out to determine the worst Crumbl cookies ever, according to the internet.
Milk Chocolate Chip
We know what you're thinking, "Chocolate chip? How can chocolate chip be one of the worst Crumbl cookies?" But, dear reader, the humble chocolate chip cookie relies on perfect execution to be delicious. Its deceptive simplicity is what makes it so easy to mess up. Subpar chocolate chip cookies can be the result of over-mixing your dough, not measuring your ingredients properly, using the wrong temperature of butter, and so much more.
The biggest complaint with Crumbl's iteration of the classic cookie is that it's boring. With no flaky sea salt to counteract the sweetness and one-note milk chocolate chips scattered throughout, this Crumbl cookie is ho-hum at best. One Reddit user declared that this flavor "tastes like baking soda and sugar" and not much else. Another suggested that Crumbl could at least add a little more depth and complexity by swapping the milk chocolate for a semi-sweet variety. This cookie only earns its spot as one of the worst because we had such high expectations for its understated greatness.
Almost Everything Bagel
A polarizing flavor, to be sure, the Almost Everything Bagel cookie from Crumbl is more savory that sweet, which the company is most known for (sometimes to a fault). This cookie — which was released in 2022 but has since rarely made a reappearance — was described as a mild cookie rolled in a special mix of sesame and poppy seeds and topped with a swirl of softened cream cheese. While Trader Joe's likes to put its Everything but the Bagel Seasoning Blend on everything from the Nut Duo with Almonds and Cashews to Seasoned Potato Chips, Crumbl decided a cookie was the best avenue for this savory seasoning.
As it turned out, customers definitely did not agree. The cookie didn't hit the right balance of savory and sweet and instead tasted plain savory, like a softened cracker or a stale bagel. Some customers complained that it made them gag and was the only cookie they've ever thrown out — which is saying something, considering the price tag of a single cookie. While the Almost Everything Bagel has developed a bit of a cult following since its initial release, we think we'll sit this one out, thanks.
Pink Sugar
When you think of Crumbl Cookies, you probably picture the Pink Sugar flavor. After all, the color of the icing is almost identical to those pink pastry boxes. Stylized as the "Classic Pink Sugar Cookie," this one is a vanilla sugar cookie base with a thick swoop of pale pink almond-flavored frosting. It looks simple, beautiful, and like the platonic ideal of a sugar cookie, but, despite being one of the first to grace Crumbl stores, commenters on Reddit are not nearly as enthusiastic.
The issue seems primarily to be with the almond-flavored frosting, which relies on almond extract — too much of it, if posts are to be believed. Some Reddit users called the flavor off-putting with an exaggerated artificiality that cancels out any sugar cookie notes. There's also a clear lack of texture between the soft cookie and the soft frosting, with no chunks or mix-ins to break up the monotony. Of all the regular cookies frequently featured in Crumbl's lineup, the Classic Pink Sugar reappeared again and again on then multiple "worst cookie" lists we looked at.
Milk Glaze Ft. Fruity Pebbles
Confession: We love cereal. As a snack, lazy breakfast, or when we just want a bite of something a little sweet before bed. With milk or without — we're not picky. From the best flavors of Cheerios to a munchable granola, we'll have a few boxes in our house at any given time, just in case. All of this is to say that we were shocked when we learned how poorly Crumbl did at incorporating this beloved breakfast food into its cookies (and not for the only time on this list, either).
The Milk Glaze ft. Fruity Pebbles cookie (sometimes called the Cereal Milk cookie) is described as a cereal-inspired sugar cookie with a milk glaze that's then covered with Fruity Pebbles cereal. The idea is clearly like a portable bowl of sweetened cereal, but that's not how all customers found it tasted.
Multiple Reddit users stated that this cookie had an incredibly strange aftertaste that ranged in flavor from Windex to baby wipes. They complained that the cereal was stale the day they purchased it (which could be a result of the flakes sitting in the glaze and getting strangely soggy) and that the overall effect was unpleasant. Expecting a fruity cereal and tasting baby wipes instead? No, thank you.
Cookie Dough
In addition to complaints about being too sweet, Crumbl Cookies has also faced criticism for the cookies being too soft, to the point of being under-baked and doughy. A friend of our, after trying her first Crumbl cookie, stated, "You can really taste the flour." Not exactly high praise. For Crumbl's Cookie Dough cookie, however, being under-baked is sort of the point.
This flavor features a brown sugar cookie topped with a cookie dough buttercream and finished with chunks of cookie dough. Cookie dough to the power of three! If you're ordering something with cookie dough in it, you're expecting a level of softness, but plenty of Crumbl customers said that the cookie dough on top of the cookie was not good at all. "Brown sugar Play-Doh" and "buttery Play-Doh" were two descriptors seen in comments, along with a complaint that the cookie has a sour milk flavor (which we think may have been caused by the cookie dough buttercream). The Cookie Dough cookie is a popular variety, however, so you may just have to try it for yourself.
Rice Krispies
This is the first instance on this list (but not the last) where we asked ourselves, "Is this even a cookie?" In 2023, when Crumbl released this flavor, the brand called it a cookie. In fact, it was called the Classic Krispies Bar Cookie featuring Rice Krispies. But, try as we might, we could detect no actual cookie in this so-called cookie. It's just a Rice Krispies treat in a circular shape! One Crumbl employee on Reddit decried the invention, saying that it was a waste of customers' money and also gave employees a headache thanks to all that melted marshmallow floating around. Another Reddit user concurred, writing, "Being sweet and round does not make you a cookie."
So, with this knowledge in mind, we had to add this concoction to our list, even if it doesn't fit the description of "cookie." Crumbl marketed it as such, and so this is firmly where it belongs. In addition to only being a Rice Krispie treat without any bells or whistles, it apparently wasn't even a very good one. And for about $4 or $5 each? Hard pass.
Cornbread
Unlike the previous entry (and despite having "bread" in the name), the Cornbread cookie is, decisively, a cookie. Served warm, it has a cornbread cookie base that's slathered in a honey butter glaze, topped with an adorable scoop of honey buttercream, and finished with a drizzle of honey. Really, it should've probably called this a Honey Cornbread cookie, considering how frequently that bee-produced treat shows up in the finished product.
Cornbread is supposed to have texture. That toothsome appeal and the natural sweetness of the corn is what makes a great cornbread. You can make your boxed mix even better with the help of a cast iron skillet. However, some customers said Crumbl's version was a little too textured for their liking — like, tooth-breakingly so. Some said this cookie tasted like they were eating raw cornmeal — likely an issue with Crumbl's habit of under-baking its products — and was sandy and gritty. While the glaze helped keep things moist, this fall-apart cookie just wasn't a win for everyone.
Blue Raspberry Ft. ICEE
If you're picking something that's blue raspberry, you know you're not getting a mellow, natural flavor. The shocking color and taste of blue raspberry is iconic (even if it is artificial), and became most well known thanks to movie theater staple ICEE. Thus, it makes perfect sense that Crumbl would turn to the vibrant slushie for inspiration when crafting its blue raspberry flavor.
This is a chilled soft vanilla cookie topped with a thick layer of blue raspberry flavored icing, sprinkled with sparkly crystal sugar, and finished with a red and white striped candy "straw." Like almost all Crumbl cookies, the look was top-notch, but the flavor? Not nearly as appealing.
Multiple reviewers on Reddit called this Crumbl cookie flavor disgusting, gross, or just plain yuck. The most positive reviews went to the tiny piece of candy straw, which was a strawberry and vanilla twist that had an almost taffy or nougat like texture. While Crumbl has plenty of sugary creations, this might have been the most tooth-hurting of the lot.
Chocolate Mallow Cupcake
In a clear case of piggy-backing off an already popular dessert (Hostess Chocolate Cupcakes would like a word), Crumbl created the Chocolate Mallow Cupcake cookie in its image. It begins with a chocolate cake cookie covered in a layer of marshmallow whipped cream, further smothered in a circle of chocolate ganache, and finished with that iconic white looping twirl. It's served chilled, the better to keep all those layers from sliding around.
Admittedly, this cookie is a looker. Those concentric circles and the swirled line of white icing are definitely attractive. Now, if only it weren't so dang dry. As one Reddit user put it, "This cookie is like my high school bully. Pretty on the outside but dense and bitter inside... the cookie was so dry it was like doing the cinnamon challenge with a spoonful of powdered Hershey's." Naysayers of this flavor think it may have been the fault of the dark chocolate base, which was bitter, dry, and crumbly. Coupled with the dark chocolate ganache, it was a little too much for some customers, who declared the entire creation overrated.
Cotton Candy
For all the criticism, Crumbl knows its audience. As a business that's built its reputation off of soft, sugar-laden cookies, it was really only a matter of time before the brand developed a Cotton Candy flavor. Because what does a sugary cookie need but more sugar?
The ideal treat for sugar-crazed toddlers, the Cotton Candy cookie is a soft sugar cookie draped in a rich cotton candy frosting and finished with freeze dried bits of real cotton candy. However, it seemed that even children couldn't get on board with this Crumbl flavor, according to multiple Reddit users. "Took one bite, spat it out, and tried to feed it to my children. They hated it too," wrote one Redditor. Others stated that, despite liking cotton candy flavor in other foods, they could not even force themselves to consume this saccharine monstrosity. Multiple comments described the Cotton Candy cookie as repulsive, disgusting, and overall vile. Despite how pretty this cookie looks, it's clear that even diehard Crumbl Fans are definitely not fans.
Berries & Cream
If the Cotton Candy cookie was abhorrent in flavor, it was the texture for the Berries & Cream creation. The chilled cookie had a base that featured freeze-dried blueberries and strawberries, a cool whipped cream topping, and a blueberry jam-like substance on top. Why not mixed berry? We don't know. Now, this is the first cookie on our list that has both devotees and critics and neither group can be swayed from their judgment.
While Crumbl customers seemed to agree that the flavors were there, it was the texture of the cookie itself that put people off. The freeze-dried berries in the base of the cookie itself were said to have a weird texture, with an unpleasant chewiness. One Redditor described them as having the consistency of stale gum or rubber — not what you're looking for in a cookie. Perhaps if Crumbl looked into swapping the freeze-dried fruit pieces for a jammy center, we might be persuaded to give this cookie another try.
Eggnog
Eggnog is another polarizing flavor. For some, the rich, creamy holiday drink – finished with a sprinkle of nutmeg, of course – is a must-have for the holidays. Others are good with half a glass for the whole season, while the remainders think the idea of consuming a drink made of eggs is disgusting at best. If Reddit reviews are to be believed, however, it doesn't matter how you feel about eggnog: Love it or hate it, Crumbl's cookie version will make you feel anything but merry.
Released in December 2022, the Eggnog cookie had the standard sugar cookie base, eggnog buttercream frosting, and a dusting of nutmeg to finish things off. According to Redditors, though, there was barely any eggnog flavor to be found. Instead, this cookie tasted largely of butter. Perhaps it was improperly mixed buttercream by a Crumbl employee or maybe there just wasn't enough layers of eggnog flavor to warrant the name, but this holiday treat was described as atrocious, vile, and only worthy of the trash can. That certainly doesn't put us in the holiday spirit.
Fruit Pizza
Fruit pizza can be delicious. Grab yourself a big old crust, slather it with frosting or yogurt (depending on the strength of your sweet tooth) and pile it high with fruit. Crumbl's cookie version of fruit pizza, however, is nowhere close to what fruit pizza actually is.
Even if this were meant to be a personal size pizza, it's a paltry one. Really, it's not that much bigger than a Bagel Bite. Another cookie that's served chilled, the Fruit Pizza cookie was a plain sugar cookie base with a tart lemon cream cheese frosting and decorated with real fresh fruit. It was pretty enough, although there was hardly enough fruit to warrant the "pizza" moniker, in our opinion.
As far as Crumbl cookies go, this one seems to have earned a solid "meh" from customers. Online, reviewers bemoaned the dryness of the sugar cookie itself, while others found that the fresh fruit began weeping into the frosting if they didn't eat it immediately, rendering it pretty unappetizing. When it comes to Crumbl, fans tend to expect pretty elaborate creations, which is why it seems this one fell so flat.
French Toast
The second cookie on our list that tests the definition of "cookie" (and the final treat on our list overall) is this French Toast cookie. As you can see from the picture, this is the only treat that's square rather than round, further leaving us scratching our heads. Crumbl described this creation as a fluffy, buttery cookie covered in a cinnamon egg wash, topped with a dollop of buttercream, drizzled with sweet syrup, and sprinkled with icing sugar. The vision is there, but the flavor?
Again, this cookie suffered from poor texture. As one Redditor put it, the French Toast cookie "felt like squishy bread and tasted like a mistake." Others called it gross, weird, and dry, with a bread-like texture that was the furthest thing from a cookie and an overwhelming taste of cinnamon. Ultimately, this flavor seemed to be a victim of the hype. With its adorable, social media-friendly look, it's understandable that more than a few customers were let down when it came to flavor.
