The Best Donut Shop In Every State
Ah, the donut. Alternately humble or gourmet, it can be simple and modest, or loaded with fine toppings, artisanal fillings, and more. As someone who once owned a donut business, I can attest to how creativity can really flow when it comes to crafting these pillowy treats.
Whether you're a person who prefers cake donuts or one who's committed to the raised yeast variety, a fan of filled ones or an aficionado of fritters, there's no wrong way to enjoy a donut. Of course, if you're shelling out the money (and the calories) for this deep-fried delight, it's best if you're getting the good stuff. We're talking cream of the crop, top of the heap.
For that reason, we've set out to determine the best donuts in every state, through an exhaustive look at reviews across multiple platforms, local and national coverage, and awards and accolades. So get ready to add these donut shops to your must-visit list.
Alabama: Bigfoot's Little Donuts in Huntsville
If your appetite is on the smaller side, perhaps you'll take a liking to Bigfoot's Little Donuts, which churns out miniature versions of the sweet treat. The family-operated business opened in 2014 and fries donuts to order for the best experience. Voted the best donut shop in Alabama by Yelp in 2024, the shop offers over 60 flavors of its mini donuts daily.

Alaska: Jason's Donuts in Eagle River
Jason's Donuts in Alaska are not only considered the best in the state but have also been deemed the second-best in the entire country in a 2025 national competition. The family-owned and -operated shop offers a variety of supersized donuts that are hand-cut and glazed. But don't dawdle. The shop quickly sells out, and even if you stop by for a sweet treat before work, you might be out of luck.

Arizona: Sedonuts & Coffee in Sedona
Sedonuts & Coffee is a locally-owned shop that proudly offers all of its gourmet-style donuts made fresh daily. The store is consistently highly rated across multiple platforms, and, while the business does classic donut flavors well, it's the unique flavor combinations that stand out the most. We're dying to try the Trail Mix and Cookie Monster donuts in particular.

Arkansas: Mark's Do-Nut Shop in North Little Rock
Donuts like to get dressed up fancy, but sometimes a mom-and-pop operation that crafts simple, timeless treats is best. That's Mark's Do-Nut Shop, which has been in business since 1978. With its small menu, the simple walk-up shop is humble, but it serves up delicious and incredibly cheap fare. For those who don't want to mess with a classic, it's the store's glazed donut that deserves all the glory.

California: California Donuts, Multiple Locations
From modest to magnificent, next we have California Donuts. The family-run business began in 1982 in Koreatown and has been open for 24 hours ever since. The artistic renderings on the donuts have led the business to collaborate with some big names, including Rhode Beauty and Disney/Pixar. The legendary shop has been featured countless times in local and international news, and with donuts that are as tasty as they are beautiful, we can see why.

Colorado: Sweet Coloradough in Glenwood Springs
Some donut shops stick to only the sweet side of things, but Sweet Coloradough also offers savory items, including sandwiches and bagels. The family-run spot hand-makes each and every donut fresh daily. Having landed in the top 10 for Yelp's best donut shops 2022, the donut offerings range from simple to complex, the latter of which includes its 8-Hour Fritters and 11-Layer Croughnuts.

Connecticut: Neil's Donuts, Multiple Locations
Opened in 2001, Neil's Donuts was inspired by owner Neil Bukowski, who was fed up with the subpar donuts he had at business meetings. Now, the careful attention to perfecting the donut has resulted in the shop receiving recognition from Yelp as one of the country's best coffee shops –– although the fresh donuts (in varieties like Glazed Cruller, Key Lime, and Raspberry Vanilla Cream) are what have our attention.
Delaware: Sleeping Bird Doughnuts in Wilmington
The love of food runs deep for husband and wife duo Leigh Ann Tona and Zach DeLong –– the owners of Sleeping Bird Doughnuts first met when operating separate food trucks. Opened in 2021, the shop first focused on handmade brioche donuts before branching out into classic cake and old fashioned donuts. The store's donut flavors change every two weeks, with some mouthwatering options like Cookie Butter Cheesecake, Tres Leches, and Cannoli Cream on offer at the time of writing.
4001 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803
Florida: DG Doughnuts in Ocoee
The name of DG Doughnuts should tell you a little something about the quality: the "DG" stands for "damn good"! Beginning out of a home kitchen, DG Doughnuts evolved into a unique space in a gas station before finally getting its own brick-and-mortar store. The shop offers what it calls "fancy donuts" (like Chantilly and Lemon Curd & Shortbread) as well as classics, unicorn horns, and fritters.

Georgia: Dulce Dough Donuts & Bakery in St. Simons Island
Some donuts are too delicious to stick to a one-day-only operation. That was the case for Dulce Dough Donuts, which first began operating only on Sundays inside a burger shop. Now, the boutique operation is open Wednesday to Sunday, churning out fresh donuts made with local ingredients. The donuts are brioche, which means that, compared to your standard yeast donut, they're lighter, fluffier, and have a naturally sweet flavor that pairs perfectly with the round pastry.

Hawaii: Purvé Donut Stop in Honolulu
Purvé Donuts in Honolulu proudly proclaims that it offers "life changing donuts made fresh to order", which feels like a pretty lofty claim. However, a quick look at the rave reviews across Google, Yelp, Uber, and TripAdvisor made us believers. The funky shop has a good time with its donut names, too, which include "Unicorn Butt Sneeze," "Sunburnt Haole," and "O Face," among others. Flavors rotate regularly, which just gives customers another excuse to keep coming back.

Idaho: Amazing Glaze Donuts in Pocatello
A family outfit, Amazing Glaze returns to its Idahoan roots by crafting its donuts with real Idaho potatoes. That means the donuts at the extremely popular shops (there are two locations, as of this writing) are moist and fluffy. While baked potatoes taste better at restaurants, we think the best way to have potatoes may be in donut form. Amazing Glaze offers customers twists, bars, cake donuts, fritters, bismarks, and ring donuts, so you have plenty to sample.

The donuts come from recipes owner Mike Nord inherited back when the store was known as Klein's Bakery. With a crispier exterior and soft interior, they're a world apart from the mass-produced puffballs you might find elsewhere.

Some notable creations we'd like to sink our teeth into include flavors like root beer float, strawberry shortcake, peach crumble, and many, many more.
Maine: Congdon's Doughongnuts in Wells
Proudly stated on its website as being "Maine's Favorite Doughnut", Congdon's Doughnuts is an institution that's been in operation since 1955. Since then, the shop has endured many hardships, but through it all, it's managed to continually bring hungry customers the sweet treats for which it's earned its reputation. There's nothing fancy in this 70-plus-year-old shop; only the classics are available, but all are done exceptionally well.

The experience is clear from the craft at first bite.
Michigan: Avon Donuts Inc. in Pontiac
Avon is calling –– Avon Donuts, that is. The Michigan establishment was ranked one of the best donut shops in the United States by Yelp as well as TIME magazine. It's a small operation with only a few seats, but that just means the family-owned business can focus on creating mouthwatering donuts. The shop is open from 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or until it (inevitably) sells out, so be sure to set your alarm!

Methodology
Determining the best donut shop in every state is a daunting task. Rather than do a cross-country trek of trying every shop (although that sounds like a fun time), I relied on reviews and rankings across multiple platforms, local and national coverage, and any awards the shops received. National chains were omitted, although some shops do have multiple locations across the state.
