Ditch The Graham Cracker And Use A Croissant With Your Next S'more

S'mores are essentially the perfect food. You get melty chocolate, gooey, toasty marshmallow, crispy graham crackers, and a snack that's fun to make and to eat. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. But if you're looking to take your s'mores to the next level, there are ways to do it. May we suggest a croissant instead of a graham cracker?

As TikTok creator @brightmomentco demonstrates, making an eye-catching "croiss'more" is pretty easy. But, as is the case with just about any social media food video, the commentary is mixed.

On the positive side, plenty of users expressed some variation of "We need to try this," and tagged in their friends. Others went as far as exclaiming, "What is this sorcery?" and "This changed my life." But not everyone was as complimentary. Some argued that the graham cracker is the best part of a s'more, and without it, the dish can't be called a proper s'more at all. Others called out the sacrilege of using such a fine pastry for s'mores, saying, "I feel like the French people are ashamed of us already," and "*cries in French*."

No matter which camp you're in, you might want to give these croissant s'mores a try. Just as croissants can zhuzh up a classic grilled cheese, they can also put a fun twist on your typical s'mores. Plus, if the comment sections on all of the posts about croissant s'mores are any indication, they're sure to be a conversation-starter at your next bonfire.

Making s'mores with croissants is easy (and delicious)

Unlike the box of graham crackers likely hanging out in your pantry, you may not have croissants readily available. To make this recipe, you'll need to acquire some first. In lieu of baking your own croissants, most grocery stores sell croissants in bulk. You can also head to your local bakery or even to Starbucks to snag a few. If you can find them, opt for mini croissants instead of full-sized for a less filling, more s'more-like experience.

Once you have your croissants, along with chocolate, marshmallows, and a crackling fire, it's s'more time. First, toast your croissants. Although some may say this step is unnecessary, it adds flavor and crispiness to your croiss'more. You can do this in the toaster or over the open flame, then cut the croissant in half and set it aside and place your unwrapped chocolate inside, as the next step moves quickly. Then, toast your marshmallows to your liking –– whether you're team lightly toasted, or charred –– and smush it onto your croissant like you would a s'more. The end result is buttery and soft instead of crunchy like a graham cracker. It's similar to pain au chocolat, but for any French folks or pastry purists reading this –– they're definitely not the same thing.

Croissants aren't the only s'more twist to try this summer

The fun doesn't need to stop there –– there are endless s'more variations to try. For a less toasty, but less messy campfire croissant s'more, you can pre-assemble your ingredients, wrap them in foil, then toast the packets over the campfire like TikTok user @kaitlynsmaill demonstrates.

You can also do a campfire-free version by toasting your croissants in the oven or toaster, opening them up, adding marshmallows, and broiling. For a real shortcut, you can even microwave your marshmallows. Then, you can add chocolate and enjoy your gooey (and convenient) creation.

Instead of a graham cracker (or croissants, for that matter), you can also try a different material for sandwiching your melty marshmallow and chocolate. Cookies, including Biscoff, shortbread, Girl Scout cookies, and Oreos add a lot more flavor than graham crackers, and pretzel thins can add savory notes. For a totally different texture, a frozen waffle (toasted, of course) or a Rice Krispies Treat can also work. Finally, fillings offer another chance to be creative, including repurposing leftover candy bars like Reese's peanut butter cups and chocolate squares, fruit like raspberries, sliced strawberries or bananas, and even spreads like peanut butter and Nutella. With these ideas in your back pocket, your next s'mores sesh is sure to be memorable.
