The Aldi Bakery Item That Belongs In Shopping Carts

Sometimes, baked goods that seem like a screaming deal are anything but when you get home from the store and give them a taste. Aldi is no exception, selling items in its bakery section that range from stellar to lackluster. Just like any other food retailer, Aldi has products that should be avoided that sit near quality items, meaning it can be a challenge to discern which is which before buying. We found that out ourselves when trying the discount grocer's best and worst baked goods, but one that was clearly a winner was the Bake Shop Lemon Sliced Loaf Cake.

Simple on its face, the portioned pound cake is teeming with lemony goodness. However, with a bakery item that is so straightforward, it needs to excite customers on more than just flavor alone. Thankfully, Aldi's lemon cake slices also boast a moist consistency, rivaling that of the similar snack from Starbucks. The only thing that is perhaps keeping Aldi's treat from reigning supreme compared to Starbucks' lemon loaf is its lack of sweet icing. Still, don't just take our word for it — this bakery product gets plenty of rave reviews from fans online.

Aldi's lemon cake is as affordable as it is tasty

Price plays into the appeal of any grocery item these days, and on that front, Aldi's product continues to impress. Depending on the region you live in, assuming you have an Aldi in your state, the soft loaf cake costs roughly $4.29 for a 12.1-ounce box. City Market carries a similar bakery item at a comparable price of $0.35 per ounce, but it only boasts a one-star review. As adored as Starbucks' lemon loaf may be to some, it is a bank-breaker in contrast to Aldi's cake, with a price tag of $4.45 for just one slice.

On the subreddit r/aldi, folks rave about the store's sliced lemon loaf. One person lauded the texture, saying, "Moist, fluffy soft, just right amount of sweetness." Another praised the balanced flavor with their review, commenting, "Just the right hint of lemon without being overbearing." As is often the case on Reddit, someone came out of left field with a suggestion that, while definitely outside the box, might actually be a game changer. "Try using it as sandwich bread with sausage on a sandwich press," they wrote. The citrusy flavor of Aldi's sliced lemon cake might create a welcome balance with a meaty, spicy sausage, but with or without meat, it is decidedly a product worthy of buying from the discount grocer.
