This Popular Hershey's Kisses Flavor Has Some Vocal Detractors

It may seem that there are dozens of varieties of Hershey's Kisses available at any given time, with flavors and foil wrappings changing every season. With so many choices, it's almost guaranteed that every flavor will have its superfans. That is generally the case with the popular brand's mint truffle flavor ... except for a couple of notable detractors, including our own reviewer. When we ranked 12 Hershey's Kisses flavors from best to worst, the mint truffle stood out to our reviewer as the clear loser of the bunch.

The Mint Truffle Kisses consist of creamy green mint in the middle, surrounded by an outer layer of dark chocolate. Our reviewer was at first looking forward to this flavor, being a fan of Andes Mints and similar chocolate mint candies. However, she ultimately described these Kisses as leaving behind an unpleasant aftertaste. Although she didn't hate the Mint Truffle Kisses while they were in her mouth, she couldn't get past the lingering flavor on her tongue, which she rather unflatteringly described as bitter. Not what you'd expect or likely want from a chocolate mint candy.

Interestingly, our reviewer's opinion is somewhat unique. Most people (at least those who took the time to post about it) love the Mint Truffle flavor. One Amazon reviewer, who gave the candy 5 stars, said she "would rate with more stars if possible." Another reviewer noted that both her clients and staff loved "these little chocolates with the melt away mint flavor in the center."

What reviewers and commenters have to say

Most people on Reddit share a similar love for the minty chocolate candy, though not all of them, proving our reviewer isn't off the wall. Some Redditors touted the flavor as "minty and delicious" and described the taste as similar to Andes Mints, but one commenter simply hated the mint flavor and felt that it "tasted alcoholic or something." This description feels strikingly similar to our reviewer's observations. Could it be that some people pick up on a bitter, alcoholic flavor profile that others don't?

Another odd pattern that emerged was that some Amazon reviewers noticed that their Mint Truffle Kisses arrived with some amount of damage. It's unclear whether this damage occurred at a rate that was higher than average, but it feels worth noting that this rare flavor often seems to arrive in a less-than-ideal state. Perhaps storage issues are part of the problem here, too.

It's tough to say whether we recommend purchasing Hershey's Kisses Mint Truffle. If you just love dark chocolate, you're better off opting for our Aldi fave, Choceur's Sea Salt Sprinkled Belgian Dark Chocolate Bar. If you're a huge mint chocolate fan, Mint Truffle Kisses might be worth trying. But if you're someone with exceptional tasting ability, a bitter tinge might ruin the experience.
