The Frozen Food Costco Shoppers Say Have 'Zero Business Being As Good As They Are'
A while back, we covered Costco unrolling its new Kirkland Signature extra-crispy fries. At the time, we were pretty excited because a solid frozen potato option had been missing from the Costco line-up. Attaining perfect french fries can be a real task, because there are just so many ways that the frozen kind can go wrong. A worthy product is pretty much guaranteed a permanent spot on our shopping lists. Now, with several months of customer exposure, the reviews are in: Costco shoppers are in love with the Kirkland extra-crispy fries. Just look at a glowing Reddit thread dedicated to the topic.
"Household staple," one commenter flatly declared. "I eat them with the Just Bare nuggets out of the air fryer for a quick and easy lunch." Another writer agreed that the fries were an always-buy item: "[Y]es! [M]y family likes them, they air fry super crispy." "They have zero business being as good as they are," one Redditor pronounced, with replies chiming in to mention that the cost was reasonable, as well. "We love them. Best value out of any frozen potato we've found. Better in the oven IMO," opined another commenter, adding to a growing debate about oven versus air fryer for crispy fries.
Over at the Snarkle Sauce on Wry blog, a reviewer couldn't say enough positive things about these spuds: "These fries are scrumptious, even without anything extra. Hooray. They're not especially salty fries, but they're super flavorful. They have just enough demure saltiness to be tantalizing." Oddly enough, they noted there were no added flavorings, which we think speaks further to the quality of the spuds and preparation method.
We have so many ideas for these frozen fries
While a limp frozen fry is a sad tagalong to your homemade burger or chicken tenders, a crispy, golden fry is a treasure that enhances any main dish ... and, with some effort, might even be worthy of a starring role all by itself! If you hack your frozen fries with canned chili and add savory toppings like sour cream and diced onion, you'll have a bona fide meal. We'll actually never be mad about any permutation on loaded fries, as long as the fries themselves are crunchy and solid enough to stand up to the toppings ... and, judging by the social media comments, the Kirkland Signature fries fit the bill. Smother and cover these shoestrings in pulled BBQ chicken or pork, broil cheese over them, bury them under fajita steak, peppers, and onions, or give 'em the pizza treatment with marinara and mozz. Treat them like a baked potato with saucy queso, green onions, and bacon bits. There's virtually no end to the possibilities.
We've often wished for a reliable frozen fry that wouldn't let us down when it comes to texture — the single most valuable criterion for freezer potatoes, if you ask us — and, if Reddit is to be believed, Costco just might be housing the worthiest bagged specimen. Plus, with five whole pounds of fries in the aforementioned bag, you will always have enough food to go around! Air fry 'em, bake 'em up, or drop 'em in oil ... feel free to form your own opinions on the best way to get them piping hot.
