Paul Newman, Hollywood heartthrob and esteemed star of the silver screen, was also a foodie who thought the best restaurant in the world was in California. One thing's for sure, however: Ojai's The Ranch House isn't serving hard-boiled eggs by the dozen! Any film buff gets the reference to eggs vis-à-vis Newman's legendary body of work — in "Cool Hand Luke," Newman's character, the titular Luke Jackson, consumes a whopping 50 eggs in one hour as part of a dare fueled by jailhouse machismo. We've all heard of method actors undertaking incredible stunts, but did Newman actually down 50 eggs on camera?
In film critic Leonard Maltin's book, "Starstruck: My Unlikely Road to Hollywood," Maltin recalls asking Newman just that. "I never swallowed an egg," Newman said, citing "[t]he magic of film." Apparently, Newman put the eggs in his mouth but spat them out between takes. This is a common moviemaking practice, as it can require many takes to get the perfect shot, and nobody wants to feel overstuffed and queasy by the end of the shoot.
Knowing how long hard-boiled eggs last in the fridge (which is to say, not very long at all), we're dumbstruck with amazement that the production crew on "Cool Hand Luke" managed to prepare no fewer than 200 eggs in preparation for the marathon eating scene, not wanting to run out. It was worth all the trickery and egg-boiling for the classic movie scene in which Luke proves his prison cred by toughing out 50 eggs shoved down his throat — literally, by the end — and lies motionless on an immense table, surrounded by shell detritus and clothed in boxer shorts and glory.
Is it realistic for anyone to eat 50 eggs?
A real-life person might feasibly take down 50 eggs at once, but the after-effects wouldn't be pretty. Competitive eater Joey Chestnut (who was temporarily banned from the famous Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest in 2024) holds the Major League Eating record for chowing eggs, set in 2013. Chestnut crushed Cool Hand Luke, having downed 141 eggs in 8 minutes. Can you say "yowza?" Fifty eggs amount to about six pounds and 3,850 calories. Assuming you were physically able to get the eggs down, one of your biggest problems would be an overwhelming amount of flatulence over the next day and a half. Apparently, the cast and crew of "Cool Hand Luke" made sure none of the 200 eggs went to waste, eating the remainder ... and, to put things delicately, the set didn't smell very good for some time afterwards.
In 2019, it was reported that a 42-year-old Indian man had died after consuming 42 eggs when he took up a bet to eat 50, with 2,000 rupees hanging in the balance. The American Journal of Roentgenology determined that most competitive eaters actually experience physical changes as a result of their practice, and their stomachs actually distend when empty. Over time, it warns, competitive eaters can face health consequences like gastroparesis and incurable nausea and vomiting. And these are folks who have trained to eat huge amounts of food! Our best guess is that the average untrained adult shouldn't attempt to eat 50 eggs, whether doing it for a movie, a dare, or even just morbid curiosity.
