This 2-Ingredient Hot Dog Upgrade Is Going To Rock Your Summer Barbecues
The choice between a hamburger and a hot dog is the essential conundrum of every warm-weather barbecue. What if you found out that you didn't actually have to choose? Enter the "glizzburger," an internet phenomenon sure to appeal to the culinary adventurers among us, or anyone who really likes a little extra something-something inside a bun. The meaning of calling a hot dog a "glizzy" may be strange to you, but the glizzburger makes perfect sense ... you just take a hot dog, slit it open down the middle, and stuff it with raw seasoned ground beef. With those two ingredients and one hot grill, you have the stuff that summer dreams are made of!
There are some mistakes everyone makes when grilling hot dogs, and not stuffing your 'dogs with beef may be the biggest one. When grilled for about five minutes on its side, the mini burger inside the hot dog cooks through, and the hot dog obtains delicious blackened char with grill marks and plenty of texture. The glizzburger is a little girthy for a normal hot dog bun, but, if you swaddle it in a brat bun, you should be good to go. All you really need is ground beef and your sausage of choice, but, naturally, you will want to add your favorite herbs and spices to your burger mix. Melt some cheese on top and call it a (carnivorous, delicious) day, or go hog wild on the toppings!
Topping your glizzburger is the fun part
A glizzburger tastes delectable under all the standard hot dog and/or hamburger toppings. Relish, ketchup, mustard, diced onion, and chili are all acceptable condiments. Are you a little more daring? Intrepid foodies can truly go all out when topping a glizzburger, because the handheld is substantial enough to stand up to a lot of "stuff." Imagine the unique "Delaware Destroyer" hot dog, which is drowned in mac and cheese, chili, grilled onions, and hot sauce. Now, we're talking!
We've seen home chefs take a glizzburger highbrow with a spin on steak oscar that piles on the lump crab meat and Hollandaise, but you don't need to worry about impressing Michelin chefs with your creation. If you want to bathe it in a layer of Cheez Whiz and peppers, in the style of a Philly cheesesteak, we won't snitch. Alternatively, grill up some thick-cut bacon and layer the strips in your bun for porky heft that will leave you with meat sweats and a smile on your face. We also like the idea of BBQ sauce and blue cheese crumbles with some Swiss for an unexpected flavor blast. Or deck your glizzburger in Thousand Island dressing, American cheese, and pickles in an ode to the McDonald's Big Mac. It's literally all good. This summer, we're going to be inviting all our friends dans la maison for a glizzburger party with all the toppings. Lay out some big trays of crispy french fries to smother in toppings alongside your meat-on-meat beauties, and you have a feast that people will be talking about 'til Labor Day.
