This Gluten-Free Cake Is One Of The Best Items In The Albertsons Bakery, According To Reviews
Eating gluten-free can be a real challenge, especially when it comes to balancing choices, flavor, and availability in traditional food retail and restaurant outlets. Chick-fil-A's gluten-free menu is not especially lengthy, for instance, and gluten-free Girl Scouts cookies are limited. Folks requiring gluten-free treats, either by medical necessity or lifestyle choice, can get hosed pretty badly when it comes to finding yummy treats that don't require going far out of their way to source. However, it's not all bad. Albertsons, a popular grocery store chain that also owns Safeway and several other groceries under different banners, sells a gluten-free strawberry white chocolate shortcake under its private-label Overjoyed brand name. According to some reviews, it's so tasty that even non gluten-free eaters might be interested!
On the Albertsons website, 93% of ratings for this treat are five stars, and the cake sports an average rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars, making it worth a second look. One satisfied customer loved the taste and consistency, writing that it had the "Perfect amount of sweetness, soft and moist." Another customer had their expectations completely blown away: "Delicious, & I'm not even a fan of cake!"
One commenter claimed that "You'd never know it was gluten-free" and elaborated, "This is one of my 'go to' desserts. It's delicious; light, fluffy, and full of flavor." If customers are dissatisfied about anything regarding this scrumptious cake, it's the price (more on that in a moment). Otherwise, quibbles are few and far between. Actually, as of this writing, the ratings for this cake are better and more numerous than just about any other product in the Albertsons bakery section!
This cake is a pricy, but delicious treat
We've previously discussed how to upgrade boxed cake mix with chocolate hummus to make it healthier, but our gluten-free loved ones have to be far more careful about store-bought products. It's delightful to know that a big chain like Albertsons has a gluten-free cake you can just grab ... but you will definitely pay for the convenience. Albertsons and some of its banner stores charge a smidge less than $20 for a hunk of cake (a generously-sized one, granted), making this dessert a rather precious commodity.
One thing brought up in a TikTok review of the cake — in which the content creator rated the cake 8/10 and only deducted points for the high cost — is that the Overjoyed cake is, at least, high-quality. The crumb is visibly airy and light, looking very much like a regular cake (gluten-free white rice flour is responsible for the body of the cake). Furthermore, there are actual chunks of strawberry in the layers, instead of processed syrup. The cake comes frozen, meaning that you can stash it in your freezer and pull it out for a special occasion, which ups the convenience factor.
Overall, given the fact that gluten-free bakery products normally come at a premium anyway, we're pretty impressed by what we're reading about the Overjoyed strawberry white chocolate shortcake. From pictures and written reviews, we have reason to believe this worthy cake will scratch almost anyone's itch for sweets, even if you have to pay a princely sum for the privilege.
