Why Did Costco Stop Selling Its All-American Chocolate Cake? Here Are Some Theories

They say "if you love something, set it free," but even the most devoted Costco member's affection for the store has been tested by its habit of discontinuing popular foods (like these 15 items). Although some Costco items didn't disappear for long, one that really hurt was the All-American Chocolate Cake. This four-layer concoction was filled with and slathered in rich, chocolate fudge icing, with chocolate shavings on the side (because there's no such thing as too much chocolate), and was a go-to for celebrations of every kind.

It was so decadent, social media users dubbed it "death by chocolate," while just looking at it made you feel bad in a really good way. It's understandable why so many fans were devastated when, in 2020, it vanished from Costco shelves. Several theories have since circulated about why, though none have been officially confirmed by the warehouse chain.

One was that the 16-slice All-American Chocolate Cake was made to be shared by party-loving chocoholics, which wasn't very pandemic-friendly.  Many speculated the sudden drop-off in demand prompted Costco to quietly withdraw it — along with custom half-sheet cakes. Reportedly there were also supply chain issues. Others focused on how much it cost to make this beloved monster of a cake, as prices for ingredients like flour spiked. One Redditor suggested the All-American was simply too expensive at a time when Costco's bakery was trying to turn a profit.

Costco tried to fill the chocolate cake void

Costco released a double-layer chocolate mousse cake, but fans online continued to grieve the loss of the All-American. Reviews on the new cake were mixed, with loyal All-American fans taking issue with the comparison. On Reddit, one fan said: "The mousse cake is better? Are you out of your mind? It is so much worse it's laughable." A self-proclaimed Costco employee insisted, "I work in the bakery as a mixer and baker. It's the same exact cake and fudge icing on top, zero difference. Only difference is that it is filled with a cheesecake mousse that's blended with liquid chocolate truffle."

In 2023, Costco's mini All-American Cakes (topped with that must-have fudge icing) made their debut. Although some used it as a way to demand the All-American's return, the smaller versions did give many people enough of a chocolate fix to keep them happy. But what Costco giveth, it also taketh away: The mini cakes were not available all year round, which left shoppers frustrated.

When Costco decided to, once again, attempt to fill the chocolate void in 2025 with a 6-pound chocolate fudge cake, it made headline news. Shoppers instantly noticed it lacked the All-American's iconic decorative scrollwork and shavings, but when it came to flavor, the store appeared to have knocked it out of the park. One reviewer gleefully said in between mouthfuls: "it's almost the exact same cake." Will Costco let this one stick around? We certainly hope so.
