Of all the kitchen layouts in all the land, the one pretty much everyone wants is an island kitchen. Whether you're a devotee of the mid-century modern trend or can't bear to part with this colorful '80s design throwback, having an island in the middle of it all is a must for home cooks. It's easy to see their appeal. Kitchen islands can be "the" place to congregate, where the kids do their homework while dinner's cooking, or party guests enjoy a few nibbles. They're also brilliant as storage solutions; a handy place for your utensils to keep counter tops clear, or a great way to show off your spice collection.

The range of kitchen islands out there is massive. If both your kitchen and your budget are on the smaller side, that doesn't mean you can't get in on the action. We visited several major retailers' online sites, looking for practical, affordable — but above all stylish — kitchen islands that will give your home that perfect finishing touch. Prices and availability were all correct at the time of writing.

Winston Porter Kitchen Island

On one side there's a towel rail, while the other has a nook for spices and hooks for mugs, and the whole thing's on wheels. Best of all, it usually retails for almost $420, but this kitchen island currently costs $179.99!

The island's overhead beam has hooks for cups or bags of veggies (there are some on the side too), there are two AC outlets and USB ports. You can even store items on the top of it for maximum practicality.

It comes with two stools that slide under the table for storage, and the whole thing's on wheels, so you can use it indoors or outside.
