12 Fast Food Chains That Will Never Microwave Your Food
Fast food is a culinary pleasure for millions of us, whether you're a burgers and fries fan or love a tasty Mexican meal. But from time to time, it can feel as if the industry loves springing unpleasant surprises on diners. From chicken strips that ain't 100% chicken to chains that have become overpriced, this form of take out can sometimes be more of a let-down than a pick-me-up. Even the fundamentals have been hollowed out in some places, where the traditional skills of cooking burgers on a griddle or deep frying potatoes have been ditched in favor of using the microwave.
While there's plenty of evidence for home cooks that we don't really need a microwave any more, it's not necessarily the case in a busy restaurant. Staffing pressures and diners who want their fast food to be exactly that have meant some outlets have to rely on the gadgets to make sure their customers get their meals in good time. Luckily, not every chain is playing quite so fast and loose with the menu. Here's our list of fast food chains that refuse to sacrifice flavor and texture and will never microwave your meals.
Steak 'n Shake
"Quality restaurants don't need microwaves," declared this chain on social media in 2026. Steak 'n Shake has been in business since 1934 but began overhauling the quality of its food the year before that announcement, switching to beef tallow from seed oils, and using a2 milk that's reportedly easier to digest. Although the company urged its audience to "Eat Real Food," it's not completely averse to modern technology: It accepts payment in Bitcoin.
Noodles & Company
Proving it's not just burger joints that want to flag their microwave-free status comes, consider this fast-casual chain that focuses on — you've guessed it — noodle-based dishes. The company proudly says on its website that every dish is sautéed to order, with a focus on using fresh ingredients for its globally inspired menu. Not only does Noodles & Company refuse to use a microwave, it won't set your food under a heat lamp either.
In-N-Out Burger
In 2026, Michael B. Jordan celebrated winning his Best Actor Oscar with a trip to In-N-Out Burger, joining the likes of Ina Garten as a fan of this fast food spot. The iconic chain is beloved everywhere there is a franchise to serve up its Animal Style burger, but its motto is "quality you can taste." It continues to live up to that simple creed and, despite its popularity and expansion across the United States, In-N-Out Burger refuses to pre-package, freeze, or microwave any of its food.
Chipotle
According to social media, whether the Chipotle near you is worth visiting or not can be a bit of a zip code lottery. Whether you love it or loathe it, though, you won't be served microwaved food. This 2023 video offered an insight into what happens in a Chipotle kitchen, and although not everything was prepared from scratch, there was definitely no microwave to be seen. While the American website currently doesn't offer up relevant details, Chipotle's United Kingdom site states the chain has "no freezers or microwaves" in its restaurants.
Qdoba
We can't all eat the burritos at this Michelin-rated Californian eatery, but for growing numbers of diners, Qdoba is becoming the place to go for quality Mexican food on the fly. If it tastes home-made, that's because it practically is. Just about everything is done by hand by the chain's staff and, as the company says on its website: "We don't take shortcuts." Not only does that mean no microwaves, but few things will come pre-packaged or out of a can.
Raising Cane's
When it comes to chicken tenders, Raising Cane's are widely considered to be among the best in the fast food biz, thanks to the consistent quality of the meat inside that delicious coating. Regulars know they are cooked to order, so everything's as fresh as can be. Just in case you were wondering, the chain doesn't whisper about the absence of microwaves and heat lamps from its kitchens, it shouts it. No compromises, indeed.
Baja Fresh
In 1990, this Californian business burst onto the fast food scene, armed with a philosophy of making "real food made with passion, for real people." In the decades since, many customers have pledged their loyalty to Baja Fresh, devouring its delicious Mexican menu and feeling pretty darn cool about it. Why? Because nothing is frozen, processed, or poured from a can, and there isn't a microwave within sight of an outlet's kitchen.
BurgerFi
You have to go back to a 2015 press release for black-and-white proof that the BurgerFi gourmet burger chain doesn't rely on microwaves to cook its food. The same document states heat lamps and freezers are also banned and, although the current website doesn't equivocally say it uses no microwaves, buried among the FAQs is the answer that their dishes "may take a bit longer than a traditional fast casual restaurant" to cook, making a strong case for the continued absence of microwaves at BurgerFI.
Bojangles
Southern-style food has many fans, including Willie Nelson and his love of chicken fried steak, but Bojangles has helped bang the drum for this kind of cuisine since 1977, expanding to eight states and counting since then. Whether you're familiar with the biscuits, tea, and incredibly moreish chicken on the Bojangles' menu or are a more recent convert, you can happily scoff knowing not a mouthful has been made using a microwave.
Moe's Southwest Grill
This colorful fast-casual chain has been bringing huge dollops of Tex-Mex flavor into diner's lives since 2000, and has never done anything by halves. While other brands might casually mention there's no microwave in their kitchens, the good folk at Moe's Southwest Grill took a more cinematic approach. Not content with dropping a microwave out of a helicopter into a field, the company blew up a freezer to make their point. Message received Moe's, loud and clear.
Five Guys
The Five Guys story began in Arlington, Virginia, in 1986. Fast-forward several decades and it has blossomed into a global chain, with each outlet selling thousands of carefully hand-made burgers and fries. All that suggests Five Guys don't have microwaves or freezers, and its FAQ page reveals that all "patties are prepared on a flat-top grill." A more definitive statement can be found on the site for a franchise in the United Kingdom, which states "Five Guys does not have freezers or microwaves in any of its restaurants."
