Give Scrambled Eggs 20x The Flavor With A Packet Of This Soup
We love covering ways to improve scrambled eggs, and, oftentimes, unusual add-ins are the way to go when you're seeking to improve the flavor. Crème fraîche is one example of a secret ingredient that makes "chef-ier" eggs, for instance. Adding onion soup mix to scrambled eggs might not be the most intuitive decision, but, when you give the idea a second glance, it makes perfect sense. Eggs and onions are natural companions – how many times have you mowed down an omelet that was studded with lightly-sautéed flecks of diced onion, for instance? Minced onion goes great in egg salad, too. The rich umami flavor and dried bits of onion in a pouch of onion soup mix are going to act as an absolute flavor bomb in your scrambled eggs.
The only bit of advice you should heed is that a little bit of the onion soup goes a long way ... and it needs to rehydrate for a few minutes before cooking. Onion soup mix is salty and potent in flavor, so you only need perhaps a spoonful to season a couple of eggs. You can scale that up depending on your own tastebuds and how many eggs you're using. Go ahead and let the soup mix sit in your eggs for a few minutes to absorb liquid and reconstitute the onion slivers. After that, add some of your favorite seasonings or add-ins (more on that in a moment) and go to town with your luxurious scrambled eggs, cooking them as usual!
You can really upgrade your eggs with onion soup as a base
The possibilities are limitless when you start with onion soup as a flavor foundation for your scrambled eggs. Stirring in milk will make your eggs richer — cream will make them downright sumptuous! We also love the hack of cooking scrambled eggs in brown butter, which, with the flavor profile of the onion soup, will really play up the umami in this dish. Of course, you can't go wrong with more onions. Caramelized onions in your scrambled eggs will add sweetness and a silky mouthfeel. Lovers of alliums in general, however, can also experiment with adding green (spring) onion or chives — how about shallots?
If you like cheesy scrambled eggs (and a lot of people do!), consider taking your eggs in a full French onion soup direction and adding some nutty swiss or Gruyere cheese. You will find that these scrambled eggs are amenable to all sorts of additional ingredients if you are the type to make a loaded scramble ... asparagus tips would be just lovely, or maybe wilted baby spinach? Meats like diced ham or bacon will really play up the saltiness of your onion soup mix, so use a light hand with the salt shaker. Of course, if you add nothing but a hearty sprinkle of fresh-ground black pepper to your onion soup eggs, we think you'll be doing just fine!
