It would be bonkers to presume a fast food behemoth like McDonald's provides the ingredients for its menu all on its lonesome. Currently, there are more than 13,800 outlets across the United States alone, and it takes the business equivalent of a village to keep them running smoothly. Take the English muffins, part of the McDonald's breakfast menu lineup for over half a century as part of the beloved Egg McMuffin. This hugely popular menu item needs not one but several suppliers to keep hungry customers happy until that dreaded 10:30 a.m. breakfast cut-off. Some of these partner firms are listed on McDonald's website, and among them is Aspire Bakeries, a group that owns two bakeries providing English muffins to the fast food giant.

Canada-based Oakrun Farm Bakery is one, but the other, Fresh Start, doesn't feature among the Aspire-owned brands (though it is mentioned in the firm's story). The most recent chapter in the company's history saw it reacquired by former owner Lindsay Goldberg in 2021 as part of a deal to buy Aryzta North America. The same year, the latter business changed its name to Aspire Bakeries. In 2006, Fresh Start was supplying McDonald's with around 20% of its baked products, including English muffins.

Bimbo Bakeries USA is another major provider of this McMuffin component staple (we recommend ordering your next one Swedish-style for a flavor upgrade). Like Fresh Start, it's owned by a large parent company, Grupo Bimbo, which distributes baked goods and snacks around the world. It also owns Bay English Muffins, which claims to be one of the earliest providers of bread for the Egg McMuffins.

Could the secret recipe for the original English muffins still be in use today?

The list of English muffin suppliers continues with C.H. Guenther, which is also mentioned on McDonald's list of partners and also owns Texas-based bakery Conestoga. You have to trawl through 10 pages of products to find the English muffins made for McDonald's by the Illinois-headquartered Turano Baking Company, by which time we were feeling more than a little peckish...

The soft bread of an Egg McMuffin is unmistakable, yet some people still mix them up with crumpets. For the record, the latter has bigger holes in the surface (all the better for lashings of butter to ooze into) and is chewier than its muffin counterpart. Despite the name, the English muffin is an entirely American food invention, thanks to 19th-century New Yorker Samuel Bath Thomas. The bakery he founded was bought by Bimbo Bakeries USA in 2019, a purchase that included Thomas' much-coveted secret recipe for the muffins. Perhaps it's still used to this day for McDonald's?

English muffin and Egg McMuffin aficionados online often share attempts to recreate the delicious carb at home, with varying degrees of success, especially when it comes to achieving those famous nooks and crannies. Some even suggest that if they're not cooked in a particular way, then the muffin is actually a crumpet. If you find it all too confusing, we suggest sticking to the ones sold at your nearest Mickey D's.
