Baby Boomers' Favorite Casual Dining Chain In 2026 Isn't Chili's Or Texas Roadhouse
When it comes to America's fast-casual dining landscape, it really is a war out there. With inflation remaining high and restaurants of every stratum raising prices, chain eateries have to compete ruthlessly for customer dollars. How exactly is success measured? One metric might be a hot-off-the-presses survey by YouGov, the results of which laid out the top casual chains by customer generation. Competition, as you might expect, was fierce, but one fact stood out sharply ... Baby Boomers love Olive Garden.
In 2025, Texas Roadhouse dethroned Olive Garden for the crown of America's top casual restaurant by sales, but, according to YouGov, the OG has clawed its way back in terms of service, value, and dining experience. In fact, all generations surveyed with the exception of Gen Z held Olive Garden in the highest esteem. Texas Roadhouse was a strong contender among all generations, but Olive Garden edged it out in most cases. Notably, the young people of Gen Z were fondest of Chili's, with Olive Garden in second place.
What's Olive Garden's winning formula?
As we already stated, Baby Boomers have proven that they appreciate the price, service, and value they receive when dining at Olive Garden. We can't argue with the pricing — we compared Olive Garden to a competing Italian chain, Carrabba's, and found the former more affordable – but we'll also go out on a limb and speculate about why Boomers, in particular, are so fond of this chain, because we suspect there's more to this story than just prices on a menu. We believe that Olive Garden appeals to the core motivation and desires of Boomers as a generation, and that's why it has found so much success with older Americans.
While no generation trend can describe every single member within it, the cohort of Baby Boomers are, in general terms, quite family-minded. Ten years ago, when the majority of Boomers were first facing retirement, Fox Business reported that these Americans were increasingly prioritizing the financial welfare of loved ones over even their own end-of-life savings. Much more recently, it was reported (via FYI 50+ Magazine) that Boomers are largely choosing to spend their money on family experiences they can cherish versus keeping their money secure in a bank.
Olive Garden has, in the past two decades, intermittently utilized the slogan, "when you're here, you're family." It's notable that, in popular culture, Olive Garden has emerged as the type of place that you bring the fam on celebratory occasions like birthdays or anniversaries. The restaurants feature roomy tables and dishes big enough to share. Could it be that the family-friendly environment is part of why Boomers love Olive Garden? It can't be proven, but we suspect there's definitely a link.
