DIYer Turns Old Pickle Jars Into Cute Treat Storage With Thrifted Door Knobs
The reason we eat candy on Halloween historically has to do with deterring mischievous kids, but there are any number of holidays that call for sweet treats. Actually, celebrating any day ending in "-y" is a sufficient excuse for some of us! If you want cute storage for your candy, occasional or otherwise, the answer isn't an expensive decorative jar bought at a home goods store. Instead, as seen on TikTok, you can reuse glass jars around your house for a fun, thrifty DIY project that only requires secondhand door knobs or cabinet pulls, a little spray paint, and a bit of imagination.

In the TikTok reel, glass pickle jars are cleaned well and removed of any unsightly labels or sticky residue. The DIYer takes the metal lids and drills a neat hole through the center, then dry-mounts a screw and makes a handle out of old spindles before topping it with a small door knob. Here, these aren't big, bodacious door knobs, but the small wooden pulls you might use on a pantry door or cabinet. At the end, the lid with its attached hardware is spray-painted and attached to the container, making a treat jar that looks a lot more expensive than it actually was.
We've discussed ways to upgrade mason jars into party-worthy centerpieces, and this hack works on the same wavelength. So many pricey candy jars are, ultimately, just nondescript glass vessels with decorative lids. Many of us hoard these old jars anyway, so it's time to put them to work as something pretty and functional!
A few tips and tricks will improve your treat jars
A word of caution: just as it's not always safe to use vintage canning jars to put up your winter veggies, so do you need to exercise caution when placing certain treats in these jars. Most hardware store spray paint in widespread use is not specifically food-safe, so this probably isn't the moment to put loose M&M's or chocolate eggs in your jar. No worries, however, as there are a plethora of individually wrapped packaged treats for every occasion, whether garnered from trick-or-treating, the Easter bunny, or your valentine! Optionally, if you're just using your jars for decorative purposes (candy corn in the fall is a prime example), you can place the loose, jarred candy in a place where stray grazers aren't likely to dip inside for a munch, like a high shelf.
The DIYer in the TikTok reel made the lids of her jars black and gold, and we think these are the obvious colors for treat jars to match all sorts of décor. Taking a page from the mason jar centerpieces we mentioned above, you might adorn your treat jars with festive bows made from colored ribbon to celebrate a specific holiday. This way, they can be easily changed with the season. You can decorate your jars as much as you'd like with artificial florals, pendants, decals, and beads, too. Alternatively, use a pedestal or old planter and give your jars a base. The essence of this project is to use up what you have! Of course, if you have a real glut of jars and supplies, you can make bespoke decorations for every festivity imaginable.
