This Fast Food Burger Chain Has Seriously High-Quality Breakfast Sandwiches

Breakfast means different things to different people. For me, it's overnight oats with fresh fruit, while my kids scarf a near-overflowing bowl of boxed cereal and milk. For those who prefer a hot, savory start to the day and live near a Whataburger, it can only be the fast-food chain's Breakfast On A Bun. It has just four ingredients — a soft, white bun, sausage, egg, and American cheese — and is lauded across the internet for being a top-quality meal. Don't confuse it with Whataburger's breakfast burger, which has a beef patty instead of sausage, as well as hash brown sticks and bacon.

When asked which breakfast burger option they preferred, Facebook commenters didn't hold back. "BOB sausage [and] bacon is the peak of whataburger's achievements," opined one, while another wrote, "The BOB is such a classic that I can't pass it up! I ordered a Monster BOB (2xsausage, 2xegg and 2x cheese) last week and it was delicious! I was in a breakfast coma for about three hours afterwards but it was worth it!"

Whataburger has no shortage of glowing comments across social media about its Breakfast On A Bun sandwiches, and much of that acclaim is likely due to the company's commitment to using fresh ingredients that have been locally sourced. The meat is never frozen, and though Whataburger's chicken strips have come under scrutiny, all veggies are prepared in-house, and everything on the menu is cooked to order instead of sitting under a heat lamp for hours.

Customers like the focus on fresh ingredients, but the BOB offers solid nutrition too

Many fast food outlets have so-called "secret" menus that offer some wild and crazy combinations – if you know what to ask for. It's the same at Whataburger, though they're a lot more encouraging about people shaking up their orders. As CEO Debbie Stroud said, "We want our customers to be able to personalize exactly what they want," per MySA. Her personal fave is the BOB Ranchero, which features Monterey Jack cheese and diced jalapeños with picante sauce sitting between the egg and sausage.

It's fair to say that, while people rave about the BOB, a fast food breakfast isn't everyone's cup of tea. But from a nutritional standpoint, Whataburger's breakfast sandwich still manages to tick several important boxes. The fresh egg beats my oatmeal in the protein stakes, and it's also one of many foods that contain this essential nutrient.

The sausage also delivers a hefty protein punch, carbs come courtesy of the bun, and if you choose the BOB Ranchero, those jalapeños will help to boost your vitamin C and A levels. Even the American cheese carries some nutritional weight, with calcium, vitamin D, and zinc. That said, you'll want to keep an eye on the BOB's saturated fat (12 grams) and sodium (1190 milligrams), which could affect your meal choices later in the day. But a major question regarding this popular breakfast sando is whether you can get your hands on one, as there are currently only around 1,200 outlets across the whole of the United States.
