Skip McDonald's: The Best Trader Joe's Fast Food Dupes You Can Buy
Americans love their fast food: data aggregator YouGov determined that, in 2026, 70% of U.S. consumers purchased it at least once a month. But those drive-thru runs can get expensive — Revenue Management Solutions calculated the average per-person quick service combo meal at over $10 per person, and that figure is rising annually. Whether or not the food is "worth it" is open to interpretation (Taco Bell is one example of a chain being slammed in the past decade for alleged overpricing); the appeal lies largely with convenience and indulgent menu items that don't quite compare to home cooking. Well, we can't control how much McDonald's charges for a Big Mac — even if we do know a switcheroo that makes it cheaper by hacking a McDouble — but we can tell you that Trader Joe's, your favorite small-format grocery store, has a ton of fast food dupes hiding right under your nose.
From crispy fries to all-beef hot dogs, TJ's is mimicking your drive-thru cravings ... and we're absolutely here for it. Not only is it almost always cheaper to whet your appetite by cooking at home, but many of these products are super easy to prepare, which speaks to the heart of the fast food experience. Not every item is a 1:1 carbon copy, but we feel that the spirit of their drive-thru counterparts is well-represented in the Trader Joe's versions. In many cases, the grocer's take is actually make of better ingredients. Next time you're parked in that sometimes astoundingly small lot and pushing a red buggy down the aisles, take a peek at what Trader Joe's is serving up in the way of fast food #twinning. You might just save money and eat better, too.
Mandarin Orange Chicken
A Panda Express chef can lay honest claim to inventing orange chicken, it's true. It's hard to argue with a sub-$6 bag of chicken that you simply heat up in the oven and toss in (included) sauce, however. Throw on a pot of rice and you have a dinner that serves multiple family members for less than the cost of one bowl from the restaurant. If you really want to gild the lily, sauté some mixed veggies for a quick stir fry. You'll still come out ahead, and the eatin' will be really good.
Organic Silver Dollar Pancakes
Hearts were broken when Jack in the Box discontinued its Mini Pancakes back in 2024. Sure, we can make our own pancakes at home (and we know a lot of other creative uses for pancake mix, to boot), but, dang it, we long for the uniformity and convenience of those itty-bitty hotcakes. Kids — and many adults! — love tiny food, after all. The frozen Trader Joe's version is satisfyingly petite, like the ones we miss, and organic as well. All you have to do is heat 'em up and add butter and syrup.
Spicy Meat Pizza
Fans of the "heat-and-meat" combo went bananas when Domino's rolled out its Super Spicy Lovers Pizza bedecked in jalapeños and three different proteins. Unfortunately, the pizza was only available in Oceania. Luckily, Trader Joe's is dishing up this extraordinary pie with sausage, meatballs, and roasted bell peppers to scratch the itch. The box claims that the pizzas are handmade, which only piques our interest. To maximize flavor, drizzle your 'za with your favorite hot sauce and maybe even heat your pizza on the grill!
Chicken Flautas
Tijuana Flats should rightfully have a place on our list of our fave local fast food chains, with locations currently in only five states. Served with tortilla chips and queso for dippings, its flautas are pretty darn good, if we do say so ourselves. This box of frozen roll-ups ensures that you have the starring player in your copycat flauta platter. Luckily, cheese dip and corn chips are also both easy to come by. Still seeking flavor? Drizzle your flautas with sour cream and guac!
Uncured Beef Hot Dogs
Less cryptic than the Five Guys U.S. breakfast menu, which may or may not even exist, is the Five Guys all-beef hot dog. Like its smashburgers, you can load them up with your choice of the chain's bounty of toppings. But you don't need to spend Five Guys money to get your hands on some worthy beef franks. These links have no nitrates or nitrites added, and they're begging to be griddled to perfection. Split the bun lengthwise for the authentic experience.
Mac and Cheese Bites
Nowadays, we like to turn an Arby's roast beef sandwich into a "loaded fry bowl" comfort dish ... but, up until 2024 (when they were last seen), we might have counted ourselves fortunate if we caught the chain's Mac 'n Cheese Bites on the limited-time menu. Those were always around for a good time and not a long time, but we're happy to say that these frozen bites from Trader Joe's appear to capture much of the magic. Dip them in ranch or marinara ... or both!
Breaded Mozzarella Cheese Sticks
Those of us with Walmart+ can save 25% at Burger King once a day, but you can't beat the deal on a whole pound of cheesy batons at Trader Joe's. The grocery store version is $5.49, which is only slightly more than BK charges for a 12-pack of Mozzarella Fries at a Florida location where we checked in. We know we're gonna need a lot of marinara to go with all these mozz sticks, but luckily, TJ's sells that by the jar.
Hashbrowns
A McDonald's hashbrown has no business going so hard, frankly. It's just a shredded potato patty. There's no denying, however, that some sort of witchcraft takes place when the McWorkers fry those spuds ... and that goes doubly so when we remember to ask for our hashbrowns to be cooked well-done for extra-crispy enjoyment. The benefit of the Trader Joe's dupe is that you get a whole box of 'browns and you can customize how you cook them. They'll taste amazing with whatever else is on your breakfast menu, from fried ham to French toast.
Angus Chuck, Brisket & Sirloin Beef Patties
Culver's notably uses a blend of three beef cuts (sirloin, chuck, and plate) to make its exceptional ButterBurgers. The blend of these 1/3-pound patties at Trader Joe's is a little different — sirloin, chuck, and brisket — but it's known to be a good one. The best part? You don't have to pay extra for premium toppings on burgers you make in your own backyard or kitchen. For the full ButterBurger experience, go ahead and slather your burger buns with good-quality butter.
English Muffin Breakfast Sandwich
A McDonald's Egg McMuffin needs no introduction, but we covered its origins as a portable Eggs Benedict dish anyway. The close sibling of the Egg McMuffin, the Sausage McMuffin, is no less delicious — and we'd argue that sausage, being more unctuous than Canadian bacon, is even more filling. It's hard to say no to a box containing two TJ's McMuffin dupes, especially when it costs a mere $4.99. That's a great score even if you use all the deals in the McD's app. Plus, you can make it at home and eat it in your jammies.
Seasoned Waffle Cut Fries
Chick-fil-A faced passionate accusations that it was harshing customers' lives when it made a much-ballyhooed change to its beloved waffle fries in late 2024. Things have since returned to normal (thankfully), meaning that you can get the same old delicious fries with your Original Chicken Sandwich. Or, hear us out, you could grab a bag of these frozen waffle fries and let the oven do its thing while you doom scroll and luxuriate in the fact that you're not rotting in the super-long CFA drive-thru line. Your choice.
Spicy Chicken Nuggets
Wendy's is famed as one of the only fast food restaurants where you can get a baked potato side. For our money, we enjoy pairing that on-the-go tater with some spicy nugs. There's no need to get in the car and place an order, however, when both baked potatoes and spicy nuggets are just one quick(ish) trip through the oven, air fryer, or microwave away. The chicken used in the TJ's nuggets is also free-range, which is exceedingly rare in the fast food world.
