The Best Trader Joe's Cakes To Pick Up In 2026 (So Far)
A famous French queen is often misquoted as having said, "Let them eat cake!" Maybe Marie Antoinette never actually exclaimed those words, but we stand by the spirit behind the sentiment. Whether we're baking our own — we like upgrading boxed mixes with espresso for superb flavor — or scooping up a slice from a local bakery, we're of the opinion that there aren't many bad occasions for cake. Speaking of buying cake, Trader Joe's (home of the rather fascinating ringing bell code) is actually a hotbed of delicious cakes. From fresh specimens to frozen treats that you only need defrost to enjoy, if you have a celebration coming up or simply want an indulgent dessert, this small-format grocer should be Stop Number One for all things sweet.
As 2026 has flown by, the change of the seasons has brought a panoply of delectable cakes to TJ's. Some are permanent shelf items that you could pick up right now; others are limited-time options that have since flown the coop, leaving us with mouthwatering memories of bites gone by. Since we classify cake as one of the best items to buy at Trader Joe's that didn't make our list, it's definitely worth checking the store out next time you want a slice ... or, at least, looking back at what this year has brought us in terms of sweets.
Lemon Mini Sheet Cake
The lemon version of Trader Joe's beloved sheet cakes made its annual visit in May, and citrus fans were predictably delighted. What was impressive, however, was the fact that many folks who aren't even usually big lemon lovers still enjoyed this cake. The tang of the citrus is subtle enough to not pull focus away from the other nuances of the cake while still being persistent enough to make itself known. No worries if you haven't tried it yet — this hasn't hit the list of discontinued Trader Joe's products, and we have every reason to believe it will be back next summer.
Tres Leches Cake
We know of more than 20 alternatives to cow's milk, so, compared to that bounty, three milks alone may seem like small potatoes, but they pack big flavor when they're allowed to soak into the tender crumb of a sponge cake. We especially love this currently available iconic treat when we're enjoying our favorite Latino foods (catch us mowing it down as dessert on Taco Tuesday!), but we've been known to sneak a slice for breakfast. Cake with milk is almost exactly the same thing as cereal with milk, right? ...right?
Strawberry Mini Sheet Cake
Another summertime exclusive at Trader Joe's, the chain's strawberry version of its sheet cake was as pretty as it was delish. It was, of course, absolutely scrumptious when consumed in tidy squares (or straight from the pan ... shh!), but we were also known to take circular cookie cutters and portion it into dainty individual trifles for Mother's Day celebrations. Topped with fresh berries — did you know that raspberries have more fiber than quinoa, making them an excellent option? — this cake was downright stellar. We eagerly await its 2027 return.
Strawberries & Cream Cloud Cake
A warm-weather delight that existed in tandem with the Strawberry Sheet Cake, this frozen confection shone when you wanted something moreish for enjoying on a coffee break or splitting with friends at a birthday party. Speaking of parties, we really liked this one for serving at a 4th of July shindig along with our tried-and-true recipe for red, white, and blue potato salad. It already has two of those three hues naturally, so perhaps some blueberries on the side would complete the picture. We'll be keeping that idea in mind if it returns next year!
Pumpkin Spice Mini Sheet Cake
The vaunted Starbs PSL may hog the limelight when it returns every August, but, in the fall, we're always charmed by a good pumpkin spice bakery treat ... and Trader Joe's makes a very good pumpkin spice cake! If you know the seasonings that make up a pumpkin spice blend (nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves are almost always present), you won't be surprised by the warming notes in this cake, but we bet they tickle your tastebuds all the same. This cake feels like the culinary equivalent of crisp autumn breezes, served up on a fork.
Swedish Princess Raspberry Cake
Maybe you've tried princess cake at IKEA, home of the food court hot dog that's been cheaper than Costco's, and were charmed by its sweet but not cloying layers. Trader Joe's rolled out its Swedish princess cake (a classic that is named for the Princesses Margaret, Martha, and Astrid of Sweden's 1920s royal court) towards the end of the year. We think that was a smart choice, as it pairs lusciously with hot drinks like coffee, tea, cider, and cocoa. This marzipan-cloaked take on a European confection also looks lovely on a stand at your next swanky shindig.
Carrot Mini Sheet Cake
Released in February of this year for its annual appearance, this petite carrot cake reminded us that spring was a'coming. We might have agonized over the question of how much ham to serve per guest at our holiday table (turns out that a half-pound per person is right), but serving this cake at dessert time was a no-brainer. We view carrot cake as pumpkin spice's early-year cousin, and we enjoy it just as much. When our brains begin to turn again to dyed eggs and Peeps, we'll look for this cake again.
